Staircase in the Musée national du Moyen Âge, formerly the Musée de Cluny, 6 place Paul Painlevé – 75005 Paris. (Quartier Latin – 5e Arrondissement)
This is the only surviving mediaeval palace in Paris. The original building was the town house or hôtel of the Abbotts of Cluny from 1334. It was rebuilt by the temporarily incumbent abbot, Jacques d’Amboise, between 1485 – 1510, combining both Gothic and Renaissance features.
Henry VIII’s sister, Mary Tudor, lived there in 1515 after the death of Louis XII, her husband.
The hôtel was confiscated by the state in 1789. It was purchased from the state by Alexandre du Sommerard in 1833 to house his collection of medieval and Renaissance art objects. His collection was bought by the state in 1842 on his death and the building was opened as a museum the following year, 1843.
The present gardens opened in 1971.
