In 1965, two lost manuscripts written by Leonardo da Vinci (The Madrid Codices I-II) were discovered in the Biblioteca Nacional de España in Madrid by Dr. Jules Piccus, Language Professor at the University of Massachusetts. Leonardo da Vinci had completed volume I between 1490 and 1499 and volume II between 1503 and 1505. In the first volume, he introduced and dealt scientifically with the idea of transmission by means of toothed gears. The Pietà Hospital, an institution for orphaned or illegitimate girls, foundlings and the female children of poor families was founded in Venice in 1346. The church of the Pietà, Santa Maria della Visitazione, which stood next to the orphanage was replaced by the present church which was built from 1745-1760. It was in the original Ospedale della Pietà that the Venetian priest-composer, Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) composed music for the putte or maidens. His designs exemplify the dynamism of what he saw as consensus based physical and cultural necessity. The building and the bridge appear in the 1969 film, ‘Slogan’ (on the set of which the stars Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin first met) where one of the minor characters performs a handstand, from the boat in which he and the stars are travelling, onto the bridge. It’s a film worth seeing if only for the crazy speedboat ride through the canals of Venice.
